What happened on September 17, 1787
- The delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia signed the final draft of the U.S. Constitution.
- 39 of the 55 delegates present signed the document at Independence Hall.
- This marked the completion of the convention’s work and sent the Constitution to the states for ratification.
Modern observance
- September 17 is officially recognized as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day (by federal law).
- It commemorates both the signing of the Constitution and the rights and responsibilities of U.S. citizenship.
The Mission of Ensign Peak Academy
