Spanish Basics, Spanish Essentials, German Basics and French Basics for Grades 4-8
One-semester Spanish, French and German courses for Grades 4-8 are fun and engaging introductions to World Language, with minimal homework. These courses do not use Babbel, but are interactive lessons developed by Ensign Peak Academy.
Spanish Basics and Spanish Essentials are different courses that can be taken in either order. Spanish Basics is the new name for last year’s Intro to Spanish course, and is the same course. French Basics and German Basics are 1-semester courses and are the new names for Intro to French and Intro to German taught last year. If you have taken one of these basic language courses in a previous year, consider taking a different language this year.
Children and youth will enjoy learning how to greet others, ask how someone is doing, repeat the alphabet, pray, count, recognize the months of the year and days of the week, say their birthday, colors, foods, and more.
There are many benefits to learning a new language, including: brain growth, English language acquisition, boosts creativity, deepens connections between cultures, and improves attention span and memory.
Babbel for High School Courses
How Ensign Peak Academy uses Babbel and a special message about European culture:

High School Spanish
Not only is Spanish the second most spoken language in the world, there are lots of opportunities to use it in the United States. Our live, weekly Spanish class supplements Babbel activities with learning about the rich culture and restored Church in Latin America, as well as Spanish grammar. Conversation and fun activities provide opportunities to use and improve your Spanish. High school courses use Babbel Languages. Middle school courses do not use Babbel, but instead use interactive lessons developed by Ensign Peak Academy.

High School German
Our live, weekly German class provides an exciting opportunity to practice German conversation, and enjoy an exciting immersive journey into the language, culture, and history of Germany! Whether you have German ancestry or are simply interested in that part of the world and language, you will explore your own personal connection to it and expand your knowledge and ability to communicate. You will learn about German culture and history through explorations into the holidays, music, food, literature, religion, geography, games etc. You will begin to see how culture and history affect our language, how we live, and our view of the world. This will include insights into the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Germany. You’ll also get fascinating glimpses into other German-speaking countries. You will set and be guided in achieving goals for learning the language and other interests regarding Germany. For those that would appreciate help with their German Family History, we will learn how we can better do that work. All of this will include celebrations of our achievements. German Mentor: Michelle Jardine
I hale from South Africa, where I have had many years of experience tutoring students both in physical classrooms and online learning within my learning centre.
My passion is teaching languages (English, Afrikaans and German) as well as History and Literature. It is wonderful to see how students grow during the year, coming out of their shells and starting to interact as they become more confident in their subjects.
I am an avid reader and tend to be pedantic when it comes to grammar. I firmly believe that our children need to be well educated to prepare them to become the leaders of the future. Being a part of Ensign Peak Academy is such a blessing, as the structure of the lessons assist us in creating a strong foundation of learning and faith, which is not seen in public schools.

High School French
Did you know that nearly 30% of English vocabulary is derived from French? It’s an official language in 28 countries and across 5 continents with nearly 280 million French speakers worldwide and growing, especially in Africa. Join us and learn how to read a menu, introduce yourself, or sing a song in one of the most popular and beautiful languages in the world.
Our weekly, live class includes Francophone and church culture, history and language practice in a fun and dynamic environment. You’ll get to know your classmates during conversation practice, presentations and games. Weekly classes also provide an opportunity to receive support as you progress through Babbel Languages. Middle school courses do not use Babbel, but instead use interactive lessons developed by Ensign Peak Academy.

French Mentor: Céline Rachelle
Céline Rachelle is a French-American lifelong traveler and student of the world who holds a BA in French with minors in International Development, Global Business, and Family Science from Brigham Young University. Since she was a child, she has traveled and lived between various states in the US and France. In her adolescence, she moved to China to teach ESL and then served a mission in Tahiti, French Polynesia. In recent years, she has been able to travel through and experience life in over 35 other countries on 6 continents and considers each of those experiences as an important part of her education and service in the world. Céline enjoys teaching French and yoga and cooking, gardening, writing, and family and wedding portraiture.
While at BYU, she worked at the MTC as the Lead French Interpreter, and at BYUCE as French Curriculum Designer for online high school courses. Most recently she completed an internship in the UK Parliament where she was invited to be a Parliamentary Officer for the APPG on the Freedom of Religion of Belief worldwide after doing independent FoRB research in Pakistan in 2023. During her time living in London, she went on delegations to EU Parliament and learned a great deal about the status of FoRB worldwide.
She enjoys adventure travel, going home to France, trekking in Nepal, exploring the UK, Canada, Western and Northern Europe, India and Australia. Her friends and family know there is no distance she won’t travel for them, especially if it means she can help them with their homes and gardens.
How does Ensign Peak Academy use Babbel Languages?
- Ensign Peak Academy has a school account with Babbel, allowing mentors and administrators to view all student work.
- Babbel Refund Policy: When a student withdraws from any world language course, a prorated amount of $10 per month (Aug-May), for each unused month, is retained by Ensign Peak Academy to cover the cost of the language license. This is due to the fact that Babbel sells annual licenses to schools, payable by lump sum, with no refund. Please let us know if you wish to continue using your license after withdrawal.
