Mentor Interview with Alyssa Jensen

During my 2025 mentor interview with Alyssa Jensen, I learned that this is her third year teaching for Engisn Peak Academy. Three years ago, her daughter enrolled with Ensign Peak Academy and Alyssa developed curriculum for work-in-trade. After that, Alyssa started teaching.

She was introduced to Ensign Peak Academy by an online search when her daughter was going into middle school. They were homeschooling before that. They decided that when her daughter went into middle school they would need something more.

Now, onto my mentor interview with Alyssa Jensen.

What do you love about your subject? Tell us about how you became interested in that subject.

I teach 6th-grade math and 5th-grade unit studies.

Helping kids with math and helping them realize they can do hard things is a favorite thing of mine. I like the variety of subjects I get to go over in unit studies. Astronomy is a favorite, as I get to teach about the vast universe God has created for us.

I love to learn, which is why I enjoy teaching different subjects.

Why did you decide to become a teacher?

As I was developing curriculum, I hoped to see how students enjoyed it. I’ve enjoyed creating lessons for my own students and seeing them enjoy learning. My daughter is in the elementary program right now and it has been fun to see her learn.

How did you become a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? What does that mean to you?

My family grew up in the church. The gospel brings a great sense of peace and understanding into my life. It helps to direct me and it makes things clearer in my life.

Tell us about yourself and your family.

My husband and I have five kids, ranging from 11 to 22 years old. I met my husband in high school in Utah. I then earned a degree in elementary education from BYU.

Where do you live?

I currently live in League City, Texas. I’ve also lived in Arizona, New Mexico, and South Carolina. We lived in South Carolina for 10 years, which is where we’ve spent most of our married life.

What do you like to do in your free time?

My husband and I serve in the temple during our free time. I like to read different genres, especially historical fiction. I also enjoy singing with my family. I am a certified personal trainer.

What is something unique about you?

I have never broken a bone in her body. In high school, I got stitches and that was because of an accident with another cheerleader.

What hopes do you have for your students?

I hope they will find joy in learning, especially in the elementary age as they are establishing their love of learning and figuring out that they are capable of doing hard things.
