Mentor Interview with Marie Withers

To begin my mentor interview with Marie Withers, I learned she has been teaching for six years at Ensign Peak Academy, with a year off to teach at Southern Virginia University. How fun!

And now, onto the interview.

How did you first hear about Ensign Peak?

My teenage niece was staying with us for a few days. She was taking classes at Ensign Peak Academy, and I just so happened to notice. After that, I contacted Diann to see if they needed someone to teach art. From there, I started to teach art. I’ve also helped develop the art and geography curriculum.

What do you love about your subject? Tell us about how you became interested in that subject.

I like that we get to teach our students in the light of the gospel. I have a personal interest in the subject I am teaching. I absolutely love art and travel, geography, and to learn about other countries.

Why did you decide to become a teacher?

Initially, it was to earn a living when I was younger. I was studying art, but figured I needed to have another skill as well. I enjoyed helping people to learn and have their “aha” moments. Also, I liked the combination of being able to teach and use my craft. I enjoy working with students.

How did you become a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? What does that mean to you?

I was born in the church. My family has been in the church for several generations. It means a lot to me. I love the eternal plan of the family and progression, and being able to help people appreciate it as well.

Tell us about yourself and your family.

I’m single and the oldest of 9 children. I have 34 nieces and nephews. I’m living with my mom right now, who is 90. She has around 24 great-grandchildren.

Where do you live?

Rexburg, Idaho

What do you like to do in your free time?

Taking pictures is another favorite pastime of mine. I like to drive over to the Tetons to take pictures and hike around. I like to do family stuff and learn new things. Also, astronomy is another subject I could get into if I had the time. Additionally, I like to garden.

What is something unique about you?

I served a mission in Thailand. Also, I’m practicing Thai in case I get to go back there.

What hopes do you have for your students?

I hope they can learn how to learn and love learning. I hope that they can learn to distinguish between truth and error, that they can learn right from wrong, and learn to have good friendships and companions.
