In my mentor interview with Carolyn Marriott, I learned she has been working for Ensign Peak Academy for seven years.
She started off teaching Spanish and Geography. She has also taught middle school English and Literature. Lastly, she has done some work adding graphics to the Ensign Peak Academy curriculum.
Without further introduction, here is my mentor interview with Carolyn Marriott.
How did you first hear about Ensign Peak?
I feel like finding Ensign Peak Academy was really inspired. I got to the point where I felt like I needed to think about the future, specifically what I could do with my skills and degree. Diann got my name from a mutual friend. I had heard Diann speak before and one day I got a call from Diann out of the blue. Soon after that, I started teaching.
What do you love about your subject? Tell us about how you became interested in that subject.
Spanish is in my blood. After my dad served in the military (he served in WWII at the Battle of the Bulge), he got called on a mission to Argentina and served for 3 years. Also, I got a bachelor’s degree in Spanish. So I’ve been fully immersed in Spanish all of my life.
I have always loved words. I learned English grammar by studying Spanish.
Why did you decide to become a teacher?
I homeschooled my kids while they were growing up. I have taught in quite a few homeschool groups. Also, the opportunity to teach at Engisn Peak Academy seemed to fit.
How did you become a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? What does that mean to you?
I was born in the church and served a mission. The grandparents on one side of my family were converts to the church and the great-grandparents on the other were pioneers who crossed the plains.

Being a member means everything to me. It affects how I think and navigate the world. I am so grateful for the ordinances of the temple and all the knowledge of the restoration.
Tell us about yourself and your family.
I graduated from BYU and lived in Tacoma, Washington for 27 years.
I have seven kids and 20 grandkids and still counting.
I’ve run marathons, including the Boston Marathon.
Where do you live?
Wallsburg, Utah
What do you like to do in your free time?
I am a bit of a workaholic. I love to read. Right now I am going through the Harvard Classics.
What is something unique about you?
I served a mission in Argentina. I have also traveled to something like 25 countries.

What hopes do you have for your students?
I hope that many students come away with a love of learning. In addition, I hope that they will recognize the discipline that is required to get a great education. Time and effort for your education are worth it. Lastly, through their education, they are better able to fulfill the purposes that God has for them.
